Oil spill modelling in Burrard Inlet

The evidence:

  • The oil spill model used by Kinder Morgan has serious shortcomings in modelling spills in Burrard Inlet, including not allowing beached oil to re-enter the water, as well as making unrealistic assumptions of oil spill trajectories.
  • New model commissioned by intervenors shows oil spills in Burrard Inlet have the potential to spread throughout the inlet from the Indian and Port Moody Arms, to beyond the Outer Harbor, and beached oil re-entering the water has a large impacts on oil distribution.
