Diluted bitumen facts
Submitted by: City of Vancouver
- Bitumen is diluted with a diluent to make “dilbit”, which can be carried through pipelines.
- If spilled in water, the diluent can evaporate from the dilbit, causing the bitumen to sink and making cleaning up the spill harder.
- Evaporated diluent can be harmful to human health in both the short and long term.
