Economic impacts of a tanker spill on Vancouver

Submitted by: City of Vancouver

The evidence:

  • A 16,000 m³ oil spill could cause losses of $201-$687 million in gross domestic product (GDP) for a spill in May, and of $115-$575 million for a spill in October. At the upper levels, this represents losses of 40% and 34% of the GDP from the proposed project, respectively.
  • The analysis is limited in scope: the report only considered five ocean-dependent activities in Vancouver, and did not consider the costs of the spill response.
