The Pipeline, Employment, and the Economy

The evidence:

  • Focusing on extracting and exporting raw bitumen prevents Canada from experiencing the increased employment and economic advantages that come from upgrading and refining the oil within Canada. The Trans Mountain pipeline would exacerbate this.
  • The panel overseeing the hearing ruled, contrary to how the board has operated in previous hearings, that the effects of the pipeline on job creation is beyond the board’s mandate.
  • The pipeline has strong possibility of disrupting BC’s fishing industry by increasing tanker traffic, and potential spills.
