Impacts of oil spills on local governments

Submitted by: City of Vancouver

The evidence:

  • Municipalities tend to bear the brunt of the damage, losses, and costs from oil spills.
  • Based on assessment of past spills, there could be a high level of expense incurred by local government and the public sector (up to $1 billion) in the event of an oil spill.
  • Characteristics of spill location can alter spill impacts: spills in-shore or adjacent to high population areas are more expensive to clean.
