Air quality and oil spills in Burrard Inlet and English Bay

The evidence:

A 16,000 m oil spill at English Bay, the First Narrows Bridge or the Second Narrows Bridge, or a 8,000 m3 oil spill at Westridge Terminal, could result in

  • Mild, transient health effects from benzene exposure in 2,600 to 31,400 people, in an area covering 7-42 km2
  • Irreversible or other serious health effects from benzene exposure to people in Stanley Park, Lions Gate Bridge, Second Narrows Bridge and individuals on the water
