Earthquake Risk in the Lower Mainland
Submitted by: BROKE
- There is a high likelihood of earthquakes in the Lower Mainland due to its location near active plate tectonics (73% probability within next 50 years of moderate-to-very-strong ground shaking).
- While there is low seismic risk to the pipeline infrastructure from low-magnitude earthquakes, the risk is moderate to high for high-magnitude earthquakes.
- Shaking and secondary hazards (e.g. landslides) could also contribute to damaging pipeline infrastructure.
